There will be two take home exams.  Each exam will include 3 essays and 25 true/false and multiple choice questions.  Each exam is worth 200 points.  There will be a5 point deduction each day the exam is late.  Exams will be handed out on a Thursday and due the next class which is a Tuesday.

Technology:
Cell phones will be left on vibrate when in class.  Laptops are for note taking only.  Failure to abide by these rules is a 5 point deduction each time I see (or hear) these rules being broken.
Private conversations are also rude and unwarranted- they are a distraction to the rest of the class.  The points deductions mentioned above also apply to this disturbance.

Grade scale:

Grade scale is based on the total number of points earned over the course of the semester.

400 points total
400-300=A
299-198=B
197-96=C
95-54=D
53-0=F

For HST 1014 Students

There is another option available to students.  Students may choose to do another assignment instead of the second test.  This assignment involves focusing on a particular aspect of the Cold War.  During the Vietnam war landmines were used by all parties as a means of destruction, however, it hasn’t been until recently that landmine clearing in Vietnam has become an issue that has been discussed.  The alternative assignment includes developing a film for YouTube or a face book page raising awareness about the importance of landmine clearing.  Students who wish to do this assignment must contact CSM English professor Wayne Karlin or me for more information.  The assignment will be graded on a list of relevant sources (a bibliography) and creativity.  Students should examine  the role that American veterans of the Vietnam War play in regards to this issue is  vital in the post war relationship between the US and Vietnam and why this issue is relevant to today’s generation (why should people pay attention).
